Diabetes Resources for Pharmacists

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. It occurs when the pancreas is no longer able to make insulin, or when the body cannot make good use of the insulin it produces.

Types of Diabetes

  • Type 1 Diabetes: The immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. It's usually diagnosed in children and young adults.
  • Type 2 Diabetes: The body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't produce enough insulin. It's the most common type, often related to lifestyle factors.
  • Gestational Diabetes: Occurs during pregnancy due to hormonal changes affecting insulin sensitivity.

Signs and Symptoms

Common symptoms of diabetes include:

  • Increased thirst and frequent urination
  • Extreme hunger
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing wounds
  • Frequent infections

Management

Diabetes management typically involves:

  • Blood glucose monitoring
  • Insulin therapy (for Type 1 and some Type 2 patients)
  • Oral medications (for Type 2 diabetes)
  • Lifestyle changes including diet and exercise
  • Regular check-ups with healthcare providers

Pharmacist's Role

Pharmacists play a crucial role in diabetes management by:

  • Educating patients about their medications and proper use of glucose monitoring devices
  • Providing advice on lifestyle modifications
  • Monitoring for potential drug interactions
  • Collaborating with other healthcare providers to optimize diabetes care
